Giving a frame to the concept space
Locuratolo E. I.
The concept space is large, unexplored and open. Concept structures to preserve and analyze database concepts are focused, and the properties of concepts completeness and classes/concepts completeness are introduced. Outside the space where structures preserving and analyzing database concepts are located, incompleteness holds. Exploiting these properties as reference points for the location of concepts and concept structures in the space, a frame is proposed. Not all the concept structures can be linked with the scientific domain of computer science. In the open concept space, both formal and informal concept structures are located. These can be complete, incomplete, not necessarily related to computer science. An example of the frame applicability is given.Source: Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases XXX, edited by Endrjukaite T., Dudko A., Jaakkola H., Thalheim B., Kiyoki Y., Yoshida, N., pp. 256–263, 2019

DALLE CONOSCENZE SCIENTIFICHE ALL'ACCRESCIMENTO DEL SAPERE
Locuratolo E. I.

Conceptual database design: equivalence relations
Locuratolo E. I.
New approaches of conceptual database design, having equivalence relations as fundamental aspects of their definitions, are introduced. Database models, model transformations, algorithms and languages are transported from databases at the boundary between concept theory and databases. A distinction is made between theory and applications. Structures for the analysis of database class/concepts, have been chosen as reference points of the class/concept space. Outside these points, other structures, can dynamically be generated. Conceptual/logical measures of quality, distinguished from numerical measures, allow to evaluate the introduced approaches. Discussions about the chosen reference points, the role of mathematics in this choice, and the value of both computer science and languages in our society are provided.

Quality evaluation for evolving conceptual database design
Locuratolo E. I.
The article is concerned with the proposal of a new approach of conceptual database design, called evolving conceptual database design, which exploits the structure for the preservation of database classes/concepts within the design. In order to discuss the opportunity to take into consideration this approach, the structure is constructed starting from a database conceptual graph. The leaves of the structure are mapped to a logical/object database graph. Horizontal steps of constructive logical database design extend the model. The computational costs required to design the structure for the preservation of database classes/concepts, as well as the qualitative/conceptual costs of the logical models resulting from the constructive design, are discussed.Source: Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, edited by Mehdi Khosrow-Pour, pp. 2020–2030. Preservation of database concepts: from data mining to concept theory
Locuratolo E. I.
The algorithm for the integration of classes/concepts which results in an ontology suitable for the preservation of database vlasses/concepts is described. It has been designed by means of original research at the boundary between mathematics, computer science and concept theory. The input conceptual graph of this algorithm is determined as a solution of a data mining problem, which has been approached as inverse mapping of conceptual database design. Similarities and differences are discussed between an algorithm formalized in concept theory, which is not suitable for implementation, and the algorithm for the integration of classes/concepts, which exploits the benefits of database notations.Source: Interdisciplinary digital preservation tools and technologies, edited by Ashraf, T.; Kumar, N., pp. 1–18. Concepts as mathematical notions
Locuratolo E. I.
Mathematical notions are concepts since they must be understood in order to be applied correctly. In this paper, the elementary concepts of service, replicate service, and distributed services are introduced. A notation to specify the introduced concepts is given, and both a centralised and a distributed system are specified. The elementary concepts are also exploited to specify a system architecture in which an open system is proposed. The system is specified first at the established time to and then at the generic time t. In the dynamic open system, further services can be added to/removed from the previous ones. Analogously, further servers can be added to/ removed from the network nodes. The notation is based on the three main constructs of CLASS service; CLASS replicate service; and CLASS distributed service. The first is a basic concept, the latter specialised concepts. A discussion to summarize the results of this paper is provided.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2017

Locuratolo E. I.
Relationships can be established between the scientific domains of Mathematics and Concept theory: mathematical definitions, endowed not only with formal aspects but also with semantics aspects, are concepts. Further, mathematics, based on principles of measurability and logics, is also the discipline from which computer science took origin. Results of research concerning relationships with the scientific domains of Mathematics and Concept theory are described, and applications to increase knowledge are proposed.

Evolving database conceptual graph partitioning
Locuratolo E. I.
Algorithms of graph partitioning exploited in conceptual database design were reused to define a methodology of database concept preservation. An algorithm, the concept construction algorithm, that relates concept theory to computer science was designed. This algorithm, however, is not suitable for implementation. In this paper, a relatioship between conceptual graphs and concept generalization hierarchies is established at the boundary between concept theory and computer science. The algorithmic property of class/concept completeness is given and an algorithm designed to achieve this property is introduced. This algorithm, which has its own autonomy, can also be considered as a refinement step of theconcept construction algorithm.Source: Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases XXVII, edited by Tatjana Welzer, Hannu Jaakkola, Bernhard Thalheim, Yasushi Kiyoki, Naofumi Yoshida, pp. 57–63. Giving a frame to the concept space
Locuratolo E. I.
The concept space is large, unexplored and open. Recently, concept structures preserving database concepts have been designed in the concept space. The properties of concept completeness and of class/concept completeness have been determined for the designed structures. Correct concept structures enjoying these properties delimit a subset of the concept space. Outside incompleteness holds. The properties are exploited to frame the concept space. Moreover, they are reference points for the introduction of new concepts and new concept structures in the open space. These structures can be correct, uncorrect, not necessary linked with the world of computer science. Examples of the frame applicability are given. In particular, a concept structure, representing a metaphor is introduced.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2016

Perspective for database preservation
Locuratolo E., Palomäki J. J.
The need to preserve databases has been approached in the past; however, the need to preserve database concepts is new. In this article, by database preservation, we intend keeping a structure where all and only the concepts related with the database are retained; keeping the logical coherence among these concepts and relating the structure with the logical database models. The concept structure, called ontology for database preservation (Locuratolo & Palomäki, 2013) results in leaves which are incompatible concepts; encloses all and only the concepts related to the initial concept structure; encloses all and only the intensional inclusion relations between concepts. The concept structure has been mapped to statically logical schemas; this paper shows that the logical schemas can be extended to handle dynamic situations.Source: Encyclopedia of Information Science and Technology, edited by Mehdi Khosrow-Pour, pp. 1855–1866. Designing conceptual database models for innovative evaluation of quality.
Locuratolo E. I.
A theoretical approach to determine innovative evaluation of model quality is proposed. This approach is based on two different mappings to design the same conceptual database model: the former is a vertical mapping composed of bottom-up steps. It starts from the specification of a database applications supported by a formal model and achieves a resulting model based on semantic data models. The latter is a horizontal mapping composed of successive model extensions. It starts from a graph of conceptual classes and achieves the resulting model of the previous mapping. Formulas for the quantitative/numerical evaluations of the models are introduced during the vertical mapping, whereas "formulas" for the qualitative/conceptual evaluations of models are introduced during the horizontal mapping. The quantitative evaluations express the costs of what has been specified/proven in terms of variable and constant cardinality. The qualitative/conceptual evaluations express the saving that you get for what has been implicitly specified/proved. The quality measure of the resulting model is given in terms of hidden classes. These provide indication about different aspects of the model quality.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2014

Relating concept theory to computer science
Locuratolo E. I., Palomäki J. J.
An algorithm is introduced in concept theory to design concept structures related to object classes/categories supported by computer systems. Although concept theory has a formal background, these algorithms are not yet available. The approach is supported by a methodology which starts from algorithms of object decomposition proposed in computer science and reaches an algorithm of concept construction related to class/categories of objects.Source: ISTI Technical reports, 2014
